Hold Down on the D-Pad in GTA 5 and you'll bring up the familiar character wheel. Most players learn it early, then stop thinking about it. Trevor sits on the right, Michael is on the left, and Franklin is up top. But that empty slot at the bottom can make people wonder if Rockstar hid another story character there. It's not quite that kind of secret. What the Bottom Slot Actually DoesThe fourth option on the wheel is tied to GTA Online. Once you create your online character, that blank silhouette is replaced by your own avatar. Pulling the right stick down from the character wheel doesn't unlock a new member of the single-player crew. It sends you into GTA Online instead. It's a neat shortcut, especially if you jump between story mode and online sessions a lot, but it's not a hidden campaign feature. How to Make the Fourth Slot AppearYou don't need to finish the main story or complete some odd side mission to get it working. You just need to make a GTA Online character. Start GTA Online from the pause menu, go through the character creation process, and let the game save your profile. After that, return to story mode and open the character wheel again. The lower slot should now show your online character instead of the plain outline. If it doesn't appear straight away, don't panic. Sometimes the game needs a proper save, a restart, or a clean connection to Rockstar's services. Can You Use Someone Else in Story ModeIn the normal campaign, no, you can't permanently swap Trevor, Michael, or Franklin for another main playable character. The story is built around those three men, and the missions depend on their roles. That said, GTA 5 does give you a different kind of playground through Director Mode. You can access it from the Interaction Menu, or by dialing 1-999-5782-5368 on the in-game phone. Once you're in, you can choose from many characters and NPCs you've unlocked while playing. Why Director Mode Is Worth TryingDirector Mode isn't the same as adding a fourth hero to the campaign, but it's still a lot of fun. You can mess around as cops, gang members, animals, and plenty of other faces from Los Santos, depending on what you've unlocked. It's great for screenshots, homemade scenes, or just causing trouble without caring about mission rules.
